2026-09-29 16:50:01

Model Overview

The MG IM6 is a pure electric D-segment coupe SUV developed by SAIC Motor under the MG brand. It is marketed globally as the MG IM6, while its Chinese domestic market counterpart is known as the IM LS6. The model sits under the all-new premium EV sub-brand IM (Intelligence in Motion), a joint venture between SAIC Motor, Alibaba, and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech. SAIC oversees manufacturing, Alibaba provides the software and digital ecosystem, and autonomous driving solutions are supplied by Momenta and Pony.ai. The IM6 made its global premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2025 before launching across the UK, New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, and India, with full-scale deliveries commencing between late 2025 and early 2026. As of May 2026, the IM6 is available in three variants with pricing varying across markets: in Australia, the Premium variant retails at AUD 60,990 (approx. RM284,000) and the Performance variant at AUD 80,990 (approx. RM377,000); New Zealand pricing spans NZD 66,990 to NZD 89,990 (approx. RM267,000 to RM359,000); while UK prices start from approx. GBP 48,000 to GBP 51,000 (approx. RM468,000 to RM497,000). Dimensions measure 4,904 mm long, 1,988 mm wide, and 1,669 mm tall (4,910 × 1,988 × 1,669 mm for the IM LS6), built on a 2,950 mm wheelbase. The five-seater SUV offers 665 litres of boot capacity, expanding to 1,640 litres with the rear seats folded, alongside a 32-litre front trunk (frunk). Positioned under the dedicated premium banner "IM presented by MG Motor", the IM6 targets established global EV rivals like the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Kia EV6, spearheading SAIC's global upmarket offensive by infusing IM's cutting-edge EV tech into the MG badge.

Design Language

Jointly penned by IM and MG design studios, the IM6 adopts an unmistakable fastback coupe SUV silhouette. The front end sports a sleek, low-profile nose, complemented by L-shaped LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and a trapezoidal lower air dam for an aggressive stance, flanked by functional side aero curtains to reduce drag. In profile, the sweeping fastback roofline is paired with flush pop-out door handles, creating clean, dynamic body contours accented by muscular, flared wheel arches that emphasize its wide track. At the rear, a full-width LED light bar delivers a sharp, modern lighting signature. Inside, the IM6 embraces a minimalist, high-tech design ethos built around a horizontal wraparound cockpit architecture. The centrepiece is a 26.3-inch ultra-wide floating dual-screen setup spanning the dashboard—the driver's side acts as a digital instrument cluster, while the passenger side integrates infotainment and navigation. Below on the centre console sits a secondary 10.5-inch touchscreen dedicated to climate control, drive modes, and quick-access vehicle settings, virtually eliminating physical switchgear. The cabin is trimmed in premium faux leather, complemented by deep-pile carpeting and a full panoramic glass roof, delivering top-notch cabin refinement in its segment. The interior palette favours dark grey and white tones for a modern, executive ambience, though some critics have pointed out that the steering wheel design looks a bit understated for a vehicle commanding a GBP 50,000 price tag.

Powertrain & Performance

Globally, the IM6 is primarily offered with a 100 kWh battery pack (with a 75 kWh entry-level version available in selected markets) built on an 800V high-voltage electrical architecture (the Premium variant utilizes a 400V system), available in single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations.

Premium Variant (75 kWh RWD) : Driven by a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering 217 kW (approx. 295 PS) and 450 Nm of torque. 0–100 km/h acceleration figures remain undisclosed, offering a WLTP-rated range of 450 km from its 75 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery on a 400V architecture.

Platinum Variant (100 kWh RWD) : Powered by a single rear motor producing 300 kW (approx. 408 PS) and 500 Nm of torque, completing the 0–100 km/h sprint in 5.4 seconds (0–62 mph). WLTP driving range is rated at 555 km, backed by a 100 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery pack with 800V architecture.

Performance Variant (100 kWh AWD) : Utilises a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup delivering a combined system output of 572–579 kW (approx. 778–787 PS, depending on local market testing protocols) and 800–802 Nm of torque. It demolishes the 0–100 km/h run in just 3.3 to 3.5 seconds, has a top speed of around 235 km/h, and delivers a WLTP range of 505 km. When hooked up to an ultra-fast DC charger, the Performance variant supports a peak charging rate of 396 kW, juicing the battery from 10% to 80% state of charge (SoC) in just 17 minutes. Combined energy consumption ranges between 17.5 and 22.5 kWh/100 km depending on spec and driving conditions.

Chassis & Handling

The IM6 is underpinned by SAIC's "Lizard Digital Chassis" vehicle dynamics system, which employs a centralised motion controller that unites steering, braking, suspension, and torque vectoring into a single real-time brain for sharper handling and superior ride compliance. Rear-wheel steering comes as standard across the range: at low speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels to deliver an ultra-tight turning radius of just 5.09 metres—making U-turns and tight parking manoeuvres effortless for a 5-metre SUV—while at higher speeds, the wheels turn in phase to improve lane-change composure. Suspension hardware comprises front double wishbones and a rear multi-link independent setup. The flagship Performance variant adds adaptive air suspension with active damping as standard, continuously adjusting ride height and damper stiffness to match road surfaces and drive modes. Stopping power comes from front and rear ventilated discs with an electronic parking brake (EPB), utilizing high-performance Continental braking components for strong, fade-free braking. On the road, the Performance variant delivers blistering straight-line acceleration, with its 3.4-second century sprint delivering serious punch. However, automotive reviewers note that the chassis feels the strain of the car's hefty 2.4-tonne kerb weight in tight corners, where the steering feels overly light and devoid of road feedback, leaning more towards plush long-distance cruising than pure corner-carving dynamics. The air suspension isolates road chatter decently in Comfort mode, though sharp road imperfections can still make their way into the cabin.

Cabin & Equipment

The IM6's digital cabin revolves around a 26.3-inch ultra-wide floating display seamlessly paired with a 10.5-inch secondary lower touchscreen. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 processor, the infotainment setup supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 4G connectivity, over-the-air (OTA) software updates, and advanced voice recognition. Entertainment is handled by a standard 20-speaker premium audio system, featuring headliner-mounted speakers for a fully immersive surround sound experience. Cabin comforts include a panoramic glass roof, wireless smartphone charging, power-adjustable front seats with memory (partially optional on the base Premium), as well as seat ventilation and heating, with the range-topper gaining massage functions. Storage spaces are well thought out, including a conventional glovebox, a cooled central storage box, cup holders, and assorted utility trays, while the 60:40 split-folding rear backrests add luggage versatility. Cargo capacity is rated at 665 litres, expanding to 1,640 litres with the rear seats stowed, augmented by a 32-litre frunk up front. On the downside, reviewers have pointed out that rear foot room feels slightly tight, and rear passengers have to rely on the front screen for rear climate adjustments; additionally, condensing climate control, drive modes, and car settings into the lower touchscreen creates a layered menu system that can be fiddly to navigate on the move. Furthermore, the pop-out flush door handles can occasionally be finicky in daily use, and rear-quarter visibility is somewhat compromised by the steep rear glass.

Safety & Driver Assistance

On the passive safety front, the IM6 utilizes an ultra-high-strength cage structure heavily reinforced with hot-stamped boron steel. Sensor hardware includes 9 HD cameras, 3 millimetre-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, backed by dual front airbags, front side airbags, and full-length curtain airbags as standard to meet stringent global crash safety standards. The Level 2+ Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite is comprehensive, offering Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB with vehicle, pedestrian, and cyclist detection), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), and Driver Monitoring System (DMS). ADAS computing is handled by an Nvidia Drive Orin N chipset. For tight parking situations, the IM6 features "One Touch iAD" automated park assist and "One Touch Reverse" trajectory tracking, which can automatically reverse the car out of dead-end alleys by tracing the exact path of the last 100 metres driven. However, early road tests noted that the ADAS warning chimes can be overly intrusive and reset to default upon every vehicle restart, lane-centring interventions can feel overly aggressive, and the digital side camera mirrors are susceptible to glare in certain lighting conditions, compromising day-to-day usability.

Market Performance & Reception

Since its global rollout in the second half of 2025, the IM6 has steadily built its market presence. In Australia, where it launched in August 2025, the combined IM range (IM5 + IM6) recorded 754 registrations by April 2026, with 330 units delivered in the first four months of 2026 alone. In New Zealand, the IM6 is backed by a 7-year unlimited-mileage warranty, priced at NZD 66,900 for the Premium and NZD 89,990 for the Performance variant. In Thailand, the IM6 arrived in March 2025, marking the brand's second IM model in ASEAN after the IM5. In the UK, the IM6 starts at approx. GBP 48,000, rising to approx. GBP 51,000 for the Performance variant, pitching it head-to-head with the Tesla Model Y. In India, the IM6 is slated to launch in October 2026 via the premium MG Select dealer network, with prices expected to kick off around INR 6 million (approx. RM520,000).

Industry reception has generally praised the IM6 for its blistering acceleration, 800V ultra-fast charging architecture, nimble handling courtesy of rear-wheel steering, and generous standard kit. Motoring journalists agree that the IM6's cabin fit-and-finish and equipment list punch well above its price point, with large screens, AWD, and active air suspension giving it serious firepower against the Tesla Model Y. Nevertheless, overly sensitive ADAS alerts, the steep learning curve of an all-touchscreen UI, and chassis limitations when pushed hard remain common points of criticism. UK automotive publication Auto Express noted that while the IM6 Long Range (408 PS) boasts punchy rear-axle torque, the car feels distinctly heavy on twisty B-roads or spirited track sessions, lacking the body control and composure of a Model Y. Australia's CarExpert commended the IM6 for its plush interior craftsmanship, agile turning circle, and clever rear-wheel steering, but criticised the convoluted lower screen menus, charging cables being sold as paid accessories, and fine-print warranty caveats. Overall, as SAIC Motor's tech-laden flagship taking on international markets under the MG umbrella, the MG IM6 stands out as one of the most compelling Chinese electric SUVs to date thanks to its 800V platform, blazing fast-charging capability, rear-wheel steering, and air suspension; however, continued refinements to dealership networks, software calibration, and localized ride-and-handling tuning will be vital to secure its long-term global success.
